Located in west central Colorado, near the town of Basalt, the Fryingpan River, a tributary of the Roaring Fork River, flows for about 42 miles (68 km).

History

One of several legends behind the name Fryingpan begins with a group of trappers, who were camped in the valley.  They were attacked by a band of Ute Indians, only two of the men survived, one of whom was seriously injured.  The two men found a cave in which to retreat.  The wounded man now safe, the other survivor went for help.  When he left the cave, he carefully hung a fryingpan in a tree near the entrance so that he could locate it upon his return.
